This composition, divided into four fragments, describes the desolation that accompanies and follows the war events.
The first fragment proposes, on a background of strings, the main theme presented by the oboe. These notes, inspired by the images of the fighting on the Karst during the First World War, represent the overall spirit of the work.
The second fragment depicts a moment of pause in the fighting, with the consequent feeling of relief, but also of estrangement with respect to a world in which all values are turned upside down.
In the third fragment, the theme is leaded by the piano, punctuated by slight insertions of percussion, which represent the distant artillery sound, and a subdued and sad background chorus.
The fourth and last fragment recalls the first, but is devoided of the main theme, to represent the desert left by war, without meaning as well as buildings and human lives.
